Message from The Vice-Chancellor

Dear Colleagues, Students and Alumni,

I returned to Hong Kong last night, and met with reporters this afternoon to answer their many questions about the naming of the Faculty of Medicine.

2. I am sure that my responses and views will be reported in detail in tomorrow's papers. There are a few statements that I made at the press meeting which I would like to share with you:

(a) I am grateful to all alumni and members of the public who have made comments, including those who oppose the naming, for their concern and care about the University. In my opinion, although there may not be definitive 'rights or wrongs' in this matter, I trust we share the same vision of a great institution with a much elevated level of excellence and contributions.

(b) All members of the University, including those Medical Faculty alumni who oppose the naming, are most grateful to Mr Li for his generous support.

(c) The naming has been approved by the Council and endorsed by the Senate. This is a new milestone for philanthropy which not only our university, but also many of our sister institutions, wish to attain. I therefore sincerely hope that we can now go forward and all work together to make sure that the generous donation from the Li Ka Shing Foundation will be put to best use, and to make sure that the 'quantum leap' mentioned by the Dean of Medicine will indeed take place.

3. As we move forward and when time comes for us to look back at this episode with the benefit of hindsight, we should remind ourselves that the University is indeed about its people - our colleagues, students and alumni. The affection and commitment shown by each and everyone will surely enable the University to scale new heights and meet new challenges with greater confidence.

With all your support, together we make history for HKU and Hong Kong.

Yours sincerely,

Lap-Chee Tsui
Vice-Chancellor
